He was born on the farm of his grandfather, Peter Walter, where he also spent his youth. He followed shoemaking for some years, but was principally engaged in farming on his father's old place, which he purchased in 1859. Mr. Baker and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal church and in politics he was a Republican. [HVC 1890, 956]
