General Notes: Husband - John Stewart Marshall

He was born near Ebenezer, Indiana County, Pennsylvania and came to Armstrong County when quite young. He married and they lived first in the cabin in which his father had lived. This cabin was situated a few rods north of the later site of the Dayton fairgrounds. A defect being found in the title of their land they were obliged to give it up. Mr. Marshall purchased 150 acres in the woods near the upper Glade mill, in Wayne township, Armstrong County, and they moved onto it in 1844. He cleared out a farm and lived on it until about four years before his death. His daughters picked brush and did other work in clearing out the farm. Their educational advantages were limited, yet by home study, perseveringly improved upon, they all succeeded in gaining tolerably good educations. His children were all members of the U. P. church, except one who was in the R. P. church. The U. P. was the church of their father and mother.

He was a member of the firm of J. S. Marshall & Son, merchants, Dayton, Pennsylvania, for several years. In 1881 he and his family removed to Monmouth, Illinois.
