His Sipe ancestors settled in Pennsylvania prior to the Revolution.
He was engaged in farming up to the year 1893, when he removed from Somerset, Pennsylvania, to McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where he became identified with the steel industry in that region, continuing until his retirement from active life.

He and his wife were the parents of four sons and four daughters, all of whom survived them and of whom D. T. was the third in order of birth.
