He was reared on his father's farm and received his education in the common schools of Allegheny township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. After attaining his majority he followed farming until 1882, when he engaged in the grocery and hardware business at Derry station. He continued successfully for three years in that line of business, then (in 1885) retired from mercantile pursuits and went on a farm of two hundred and fifty acres in his native township, where he gave his time and attention to stockraising and keeping a butter dairy.
In politics he was an unswerving democrat. He was a member of the Catholic church.
