He was educated in the public schools, and at age of eighteen years began learning the blacksmith's trade. After completing his years of apprenticeship he continued as a journeyman, and then for some years was in the employ of the Monongahela Railroad Company as a blacksmith. He was a Democrat in politics, and a Methodist in religious faith, his wife being also a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. His fraternal orders were: Brownsville Lodge, No. 51, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and the Knights of Maccabees, No. 325.
