In the school room and on the farm his youth was passed. He occupied that part of the old family homestead lying in Henderson township, Jefferson County. He and his brother resided on the same farm with their mother, and their business operations were conducted with the utmost harmony. He served as auditor of his township, but never aspired to political honors. He also belonged to Paradise Grange, and gave his political support to the Democracy.
