He received his education at Mercer Academy, and subsequently studied medicine under his father. Later he attended the Western Reserve Medical College, graduated in 1850, and the same year began practice at Harmony, Butler County, PA. Together with being a physician and politician, he was also a geologist and archaeologist, gathering round him a valuable collection of minerals and antiquities.
