General Notes: Husband - Daniel Smith
"Daniel Smith came from Penn's Valley, nine miles east of Bellefonte, Centre County, Pennsylvania. He settled permanently in Rockland Township, Venango County, in 1815. He brought with him, five cattle, and twelve sheep. He paid $100 for the transportation of his family and household effects. The means of conveyence being a five horse wagon. The journey took ten days.
"Daniel Smith purchased land and cleared it for a farm site. He improved the farm, built a large house, and raised his family here. After his death this farm passed or was sold to Thomas Watson (his son-in-law) who was married to Elenore Smith. This farm later passed on to James Watson, son of Thomas and Elenore (Smith) Watson. This farm passed out of the Smith family connection when it was sold to Norris Campbell in 1920. The old house was torn down in 1939 and a smaller house was built by Mr. Campbell. The old house was among the oldest landmarks in Rockland.
"Daniel Smith was a blacksmith by trade, and built the first shop in Rockland. People came from fifteen miles distance to have work done. He was the first postmaster at Rockland, the first post office was established in 1830.
"Daniel Smith and Abraham Lusher each gave one acre of land from their farms to be used as the Cemetery. Daniel Smith and his wife Mary Ann (Lusher) Smith are buried there, as are all of their children, except Catherine (Smith) Foster, who is buried in what is known as Sandy Cemetery, located near Polk, Venango County, Pa.
"Daniel Smith did not settle permanently in Rockland, until 1815, but his name appears among the non residents who served in the War of 1812 from Venango County.
"Daniel Smith: Served in the War of 1812, as private in Captain Hugh McManigal's Company, Fifth in the One Hundred and Thirty-Second Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia. Commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Dale. He served on a tour of duty at Erie, Pa., from July 28th to August 6th, 1813. Also was in service from January 1st to February 10th, 1814." (3)
His tombstone gives his age at death as 84 years, 11 months, and 22 days. (Another source gives 83 yrs.)
