General Notes: Husband - John Roberts


"John came to America as a young boy with his father in 1851 and lived in Rockland township the rest of his life. He raised his family on the twenty acres of land known as Pottawottamic that was willed to him by his father. During the Civil War, John enlisted as a foot soldier in Company L, Fourth Cavalry, Sixty-fourth Regiment." (14)

John Roberts, Sr.
John Roberts, Sr., aged 74 years, a Civil war soldier and a long time farmer of Rockland township, died at the home of his son, John Roberts, Jr., on the McCalmont farm, at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, following an illness of five weeks.
Mr. Roberts was born February 3, 1843, in England and came to this country about 65 years ago, settling in Rockland township. He was one of the volunteers who responded in September, 1862, when the call came for troops to defend the southern part of Pennsylvania. He joined Company I of the Fourth regiment Pennsylvania volunteers and was disharged September 25, 1862. He returned to his farm and followed that occupation until 1903 when he moved to Cranberry township to make his home with his sons. His wife died two years ago.
Surviving are two sons, John and J. E. of Cranberry township; one daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Pershing, of this city, and two half sisters, Mrs. Sarah Smith and Mrs. Elizabeth Sanford, of Rockland township.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

Services in memory of the late John Roberts were held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Rockland M. E. church. Rev. F. H. Frampton, pastor of the Seneca M. E. church, offciated, assisted by Rev. Galbreath. The services were attended by a large number of friends of the deceased, who was a life-long resident of Venango county.
Interment was in Rockland cemetery with the following acting as pallbearers: Herbert Persing, George Persing, Harold Roberts, Earl Croop, Peter Persing and Edward Roberts.

John Roberts.
John Roberts, aged 74 years, died at 8 o'clock this morning at the home of his son, John Roberts, of the McCalmont farm, Cranberry township, after an illness of five months.
The deceased was born in England February 3, 1843, and he came to Rockland 65 years ago, where he had lived until 13 years ago. Then he removed to near Salem to live with his son, John, Jr. His wife died two years ago. Mr. Roberts was a Civil War veteran. He is survived by two sons, J. E. and John, of the McCalmont farm, and one daughter, Mrs. Dortha Persing, of Oil City. Also by two half sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Sanford and Mrs. Sarah Smith, of Rockland. Time and place of funeral will be announced later.

JOHN ROBERTS.
John Roberts, who was born in England in 1843, died at his home on the McCalmont farm in Cranberry township at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning. He came to this country with his parents when he was nine years old. Surviving relatives include the following children: Mrs. S. B. Persing of Oil City, John Roberts of the McCalmont farm, two half-sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Stanford and Mrs. Sarah Smith of Rockland township, also 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The deceased was a soldier in the Union army and a member of the Rockland post of the G. A. R.

Mrs. Maria Roberts.
Mrs. Maria Roberts, aged 75 years, wife of John Roberts, Sr., died at 1:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home on McCalmont farm, near Seneca. Death was due to asthma, she having suffered a severe attack a week ago from which she received no relief until death came. Mrs. Roberts was born in the eastern part of the state but came to Rockland township when a young girl, residing there until she removed to the McCalmont farm 11 years ago. She was an earnest Christian woman and a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Seneca. Besides her husband she is survived by two sons, J. E. and John Roberts, Jr., both of McCalmont farm and one daughter, Mrs. S. B. Persing, of this city.
Funeral services will be held at the family home at 11 o'clock tomorrow morning and will be private owing to her son, John, suffering from a case of diptheria in the same house. Rev. Mr. Walker of Seneca will officiate. The body will be taken to Rockland for interment in the Methodist church cemetery.

MRS. MARIA A. ROBERTS.
Mrs. Maria Roberts, aged 76 years, of McCalmont Farm, near Seneca, for the past ten years, died at her home there on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 24, 1914, from asthma, after a week's illness. Mrs. Roberts has been a sufferer from asthma throughout her life, but the illness which caused her death was of but a week's duration, she having been well enough on the Sunday preceeding her death to make a trip to Rockland in her son's automobile. On this occasion she visited many old friends and neighbors and enjoyed the day immensely.
Mrs. Roberts was a kindly, generous-hearted friend and neighbor, and greatly beloved by old and young. She had been a member of the Methodist church during most of her long life, and lived a consistent Christian life.
Besides her husband, John Roberts, Sr., she is survived by two sons, John Roberts, Jr., and Jacob Roberts, both of McCalmont Farm, and Mrs. S. B. Persing, of Clapp Farm.
On account of the illness of Mrs. John Roberts, Jr. with diphtheria, the funeral services were conducted in the yard at the late home, on Saturday afternoon, Rev. G. D. Walker, of the M. E. church officiating. A quartette composed of Mrs. J. W. Monjar, Mrs. L. C. Moore, J. P. Steffee and C. M. Carey, sang the hymns, "Jesus Lover of My Soul," and "The Christian's Good Night." The floral offerings were numerous and very beautiful, among them being a wreath from the grandchildren, several beautiful tributes from close friends and relatives and a handsome boquet from the "Booster" class of the M. E. Sunday School. Interment was in the Rockland cemetery. Five grandsons, Edward and Harold Roberts, and George, Peter and Herbert Persing, and a neighbor, Earl Croup, acting as pall-bearers.
