He received his primary education in the public schools of Allegheny township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, whence he passed successively to the Markle Academy, Markle, Pennsylvania; the Greensburg Seminary, the Grove City College and the State Normal school at Indiana, Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen he became a teacher, his first school being the Point school in Bell township. The following term he was at Lynch's school in Allegheny township, and the succeeding term taught the McGeary school in the same township, this being the school which he attended as a boy. After spending one term in teaching the Steward school, also in Allegheny township, he returned to the McGeary school, which he taught for two more terms. He then became for one more term the teacher of the Steward school. In the spring of 1896 he engaged in mercantile business in partnership with J. F. Sober, at Weinels Cross Roads, near Leechburg, and the following winter, while retaining his mercantile interests, was principal of the Hillside school. In the spring of 1897 he sold his mercantile interests and was elected principal of the Vandergrift Heights school, over which he presided for four terms. In the spring of 1901 he was appointed by the governor to complete an unexpired term as justice of the peace, and then engaged in the real estate and insurance business. In the spring of 1902 he was regularly elected to the office of justice of the peace. In 1894, while a resident of Allegheny township, he was elected auditor, and after the organization of the borough of Vandergrift held the office of treasurer with the exception of one year during which he served as auditor. He belonged to Kiskiminetas Lodge, No. 617, F. and A. M., of Vandergrift, and Brotherhood Castle, No. 161, K. of G. E. He was a Republican in politics, and a member and officer of the Methodist Episcopal church.
