He was reared on his father's farm, attended the common schools and then lived the quiet and uneventful life of a farmer until 1862. On August 22d of that year he enlisted in Co. B, one hundred and forty-second reg. Pa. Vols., fought in eighteen battles and was present at Lee's surrender. At Gettysburg he was wounded in the right leg by a ball and struck in the right knee by a piece of shell. He was promoted to sergeant and was honorably discharged at Washington City May 15, 1865. He then returned home and was engaged for twenty-one years in cultivating and improving his farm. In 1887 he embarked in a grocery business at Latrobe and was very successful.
