The ancestor of this family came from Switzerland and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about the year 1700. He and his children were Swiss Mennonites, and were well known in the community.

He emigrated from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Penn township, Westmoreland County, in the early years of the nineteenth century.
