General Notes: Husband - John McCrea
His father settled at a very early day in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. During the French and Indian war he sent his family back to their former home east of the mountains, he himself remaining at Fort Wallace, at which he died. John McCrey returned to this region with his mother, and resided on a farm two miles from Blairsville, where he passed the remainder of his days.
He and his wife were early settlers of Black-lick township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, near Bell's mills.
His father had located a tract in Burrell township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, in 1774. When the son was only six months old, they were forced to flee to Wallace's fort, in Westmoreland County. Mrs. McCrea hastened to the fort, bearing John, their only child, and her husband waited behind to hide the household furniture, and was closely pursued by the Indians as he hurried to the fort. He died the next day from the effect of his over-exertion. His widow returned to Franklin county, where she re-married.
He lived with his mother and step-father until 1800, when he returned to the place of his birth, and turned his attention to developing a farm from the wilderness. He became the owner of more than three hundred and fifty acres of land, much of which he reclaimed from the wilderness, and he devoted his active life to farming in his native county. He died on his farm, near Smith Station, in 1861, while living with his son Samuel, his age at the time of his demise being eighty-four years, seven months, four days.
He was a Democrat in his political proclivities, and both he and his wife were zealous members of the United Presbyterian Church.
