When quite young, he was bound out to learn a trade in Maryland. He ran away from home at the age of eleven, going north, driving horses and working on the canal. He served in the War of 1812 from Ohio.

He served as a private in the War of 1812, from Pennsylvania, probably Garland, Warren County, as that was where he settled. [GPHNP, 367]
