He was educated at the academies of Cumberland, Maryland, Frederick City, Maryland, Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, and Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. He read medicine with Dr. John Boggs, of Greencastle, Franklin County, and graduated at Jefferson Medical College in 1827, and located in Blairsville, Indiana County, in April of that year. During the Civil War he served as examining surgeon for the draft commissioners of Indiana County.
