He was a farmer and oil producer, and owned ninety-one acres.

A farmer in early life and subsequently an oil producer, he also served as county supervisor, school director and in other offices of responsibility and trust. For twenty-eight years he was an elder in the First Lutheran Church at Knox, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, and over a long period was active and influential in Democratic politics.
