Dr. Freeman W. Long
Dr. Freeman W. Long, 101, of Marianne, died at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, in Beverly Healthcare-Shippenville.
Born Oct. 16, 1901, on the family farm in Ashland Township, Clarion County, he was the son of George W. and Christina P. Exley Long.
Dr. Long was a graduate of Salem High School, Grove City College and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathy.
He specialized in proctology and practiced in Oil City from 1940 to 1973 and then practiced in Marianne from 1973 until his retirement in the early 1980s.
Dr. Long was the last remaining founder of Clarion Hospital. He, along with Dr. William McNeal, Dr. William A. Kehler, his brother, Dr. C. B. Long, and Dr. Albert Myers, established Clarion Osteopathic Community Hospital in 1954.
He was a lifelong member of the Salem Lutheran Church and could remember riding to the church in a horse-drawn buggy with his parents.
Dr. Long was the oldest member of Edenburg Lodge No. 550, F. & A.M., joining the organization in 1926.
He also was a member of the Venango Lodge of Perfection, the Coudersport Consistory and the Zem Zem Temple in Erie.
Dr. Long enjoyed working in his yard and did his own mowing until he was 98 years old. He also enjoyed visiting friends and dining out and always had a joke or story to relate.
He was married in 1952 to Charlyne MacDonald Hartzfeld, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter-in-law, Mary Louise Hartzfeld, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three grandchildren, Steven Hartzfeld and David Hartzfeld of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Michelle Marraccini and her husband, Angelo, of Woodstock, Ga.; and a great-grandson, Angelo Joseph III, of Woodstock, Ga.
Additional survivors include two nephews, Dr. Vaughn Long and his wife, Helen, of Mercer and Norman Long and his wife, Jane, of Meadville; a niece, Georgeine
Long of Meadville; three great-nephews, Dr. Brenton Long, Douglas Long and Jeffrey Long; and a great-niece, Marsha Wimer.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Long was preceded in death by his step-son, Clive Hartzfeld, in 1993; three brothers, Dr. Custer Long, Clemens Long and George Sidney Long; a nephew, Robert E. Long; and a great-nephew, Gregory Long.
The family will receive friends from 1 M 2 p.m. today in the David C. McEntire Funeral Home in Knox.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today in the funeral home with the Rev. Robert McCardy, pastor of the Salem Lutheran Church, officiating.
Interment will follow in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery.
