He was educated in the common schools until eighteen, when he entered Westminster College, New Wilmington, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, where he was graduated in 1871. He then taught in the Dayton Academy, Armstrong County, one year. In 1872 he began read­ing law with White & Jackson; was admitted to the bar in 1873, and practiced until 1877, when he was appointed deputy sheriff, which position he held until the spring of 1888, thereafter giving his attention to law. He was a Republican, and he and wife were members of the Second United Presbyterian Church.
