He was reared on the home farm, and continued to live on his portion of it until 1891. In that year he became an employee in the Court House in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife had several children that died in childhood, and only two reached maturity.
He was a member of Company F, Thirty-ninth Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the war between the States.
