His boyhood days were passed upon the farm in assisting his parents with the home duties, and he attended the district school of his neighborhood, supplementing this with a course at Edinboro State Normal School and the Prospect Academy, after­wards teaching in the public schools. He was a stanch Republican; a leading member of his party in Fairview township; filled the various local offices of his community, and was a delegate to the State convention in 1894. He is a member of Derrick Lodge, K. of P.; also of Millerstown Lodge, I. O. O. F., and the Jr. O. U. A. M.
