General Notes: Husband - John C. Risher
He developed his father's coal-land at Dravosburg, Pennsylvania, which had been leased, and was one of the leading coal-men on the river.
In 1851, he bought the coal-fields at Amity, Pennsylvania, which he and his son developed, the firm being known as J. C. Risher & Co. For seventeen years his son, Daniel, was the third partner, and on him devolved most of the business, employing upward of four hundred men, and at times getting out 25,000 bushels of coal per day. They had their own sawmill, and built many barges for their own coal trade and for other people.
In 1845 he was engaged in mercantile trade in Pittsburgh, and in the gold rush of 1849 joined a party journeying to California, afterward returning, having met with no sensational good fortune. When he came east, he settled in Dravosburg, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and was there a coal merchant until his death, gaining a substantial trade and conducting profitable operations. [GPHWP, 1202]
He was of German descent, his ancestors having settled in Pennsylvania, in Allegheny County, at an early date. He settled at Six Mile Ferry, near the Snodgrass homestead, where he was the owner of a large estate, but later he removed to Dravosburg, and there purchased a large tract of land, on which Dravosburg was located. He died at the age of about seventy years, at the time being the owner of more than one thousand acres of land. He was also largely interested in coal production, and owned a string of coal boats on the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. [GPHWP, 1748]
