He acquired his primary education in the common schools, and subsequently attended the Corsica Academy and the Edinboro State Normal. When not in school he assisted in the work of the home farm until eighteen years of age, and then began teaching, following that profession during the winter season, while during summer months he still attended school for a time. In 1884 he began the study of medicine, under the direction of Dr. A, K. Carmichael, and later entered the Western Reserve University, of Cleveland, Ohio, where he graduated in 1887 with the degree of M. D. Returning to Greenville, Clarion County, Pennsylvania, he at once opened an office and soon succeeded in building up a large and lucrative practice.
