He was reared in Homestead, Pennsylvania, and educated in his native county. He clerked for his father in Pittsburgh for a number of years, and was always more or less identified with his father's business. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. and A. O. U. W., and was a republican.
