He was educated in private schools and the Western University, and when seventeen years old began dealing in coal, a business he continued many years. He was one of the incorporators of the Pittsburgh Clay Pot company, and was a director of the Cash Insurance company; Monongahela Bridge company; of the Pittsburgh & Castle Shannon, Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny, and Lexington & Big Sandy Railroad companies. Beginning in 1873 he was a member of the firm of Phillips, Nimmick & Co., owners and operators of the Sligo rolling-mills.
