In 1862 he and his brother, Hugh F., rented the home farm in East Finley township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, which a few years later they purchased. The property consisted of 206 acres of prime land, equipped with commodious residence and out-buildings. The brothers were constant companions from boyhood days, never married, and became quiet, unassuming men, good citizens and respected neighbors. Both were lifelong Democrats. They later rented their land, and lived retired lives with their sister, Mary Jane, a spinster, who resided with her brothers beginning in 1862, attending to the household duties.
