He was educated in the public schools of Armstrong County, PA, and until he was twenty years old worked on his father's farm. At that time he secured em­ployment with the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, of Ford City, continuing this con­nection for six years. In the year 1900 he and his brother-in-law, J. S. Artman, estab­lished a shoe store in Ford City, under the firm name of Artman & Heilman.
