General Notes: Husband - George McClelland
He was one of the oldest settlers in Venango County, Pennsylvania, and settled first at a place now called Springville, Sandy Creek township, about 1795. [HVC 1879, 492]
He immigrated to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1795. There he grew to manhood and married. In 1803 he came to Venango County, locating in what became Victory township, but within a few years removed to Franklin and conducted the United States hotel. He was a man of much energy and was actively associated with early business and political affairs. He built and operated a furnace at Sandy creek on the Pittsburgh road, one of the first in the county. He was one of the projectors of the Venango Democrat, and a leading man in local politics, serving as county commissioner from 1808 to 1812, as county treasurer, 1813-15, 1820-21, and in 1824, and as county auditor, 1819-21. In the later years of his life he engaged in the business of dealing in stock, buying throughout Venango and adjoining counties and selling in distant markets. [HVC 1890, 749]
He came to America when a youth, locating in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, as early as 1795. He remained there until after his marriage, settling in Venango County in 1803, near Springville, in what later became Victory Township. However, he is best known as a pioneer of Franklin, having removed to the town in 1806 and passed the remainder of his life there. For a number of years he owned and operated the "United States Hotel." He was a man of progressive and energetic disposition, having erected one of the first grist and saw mills in the county and also one of the first furnaces, the latter being located at Sandy creek on the Pittsburgh road. In the later years of his life he was engaged as a stock dealer, buying all over Venango and adjoining counties and selling in distant markets. He was also active in public affairs, serving as county commissioner from 1808 to 1812, as county treasurer in 1813-15, in 1820-21, and in 1824, and as county auditor in 1819-21. He was one of the founders of the Venango Democrat. [CAB, 805]
According to notes left by his daughter Eliza, her father never en-gaged in stock-dealing and did not die in New York state while on a selling expedition, but at his home in Franklin.
