Civil War: He enlisted in the first call for volunteers (1861), known as the "three months' men," then re-enlisted and served throughout the war. He was wounded at the battle of Spottsylvania Court House; was promoted, and at the end of the war was captain of Company D, One Hundred and Fortieth P. V. I.
