General Notes: Husband - William A. McClay
He passed his earlier years on the home farm in Canton township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, receiving a limited education, but as he possessed a retentive memory, and was an indefatigable reader, he eventually, notwithstanding the privations of youth, became one of the most intelligent men in his township.
After the death of his father, he and his three brothers divided the property among themselves without recourse to legal aid and William long retained the portion allotted him, to which he made many improvements. The house was of the "L" style, 36x82. The barn, which was erected with only the assistance of his children, was a commodious structure, and the well-cultivated farm afforded evidence of the thrift and enterprise of the owner.
In politics he was the stanchest of Republicans, and for many years filled the office of judge of elections in his township. The family were liberal supporters and earnest members of the Disciple Church at Washington.
