He and his wife were members of the Society of Friends, and of English descent. He was a farmer. His ancestors were among the earliest settlers in Greene County, Pennsylvania.
His father died in Fayette County, where he had resided since 1837. His family consisted of ten children, eight of whom grew to maturity.
