He attended the Rankin District school and then turned his attention to farm pursuits, and dur­ing his father's lifetime assisted in caring for about 300 head of sheep annually. He resided on the homestead farm and after his marriage when he came into possession, he did considerable improving, although the only building that had to be erected was a new residence, which was built in 1904. Mr. McCalmont then kept about 125 sheep over winter, these being very choice in quality, of the American Merino breed, and he also had a fine herd of both Holstein and Jersey cattle and sold about 900 gallons of milk a month. About ten acres of the farm was never cleared and he had a large tract of valuable timber. The coal was sold to the Pittsburg Coal Company but at the time no test had ever been made for oil or gas.
He was a member of the United Presbyte­rian Church in Mt. Pleasant Township and served several years as a trustee. In politics he was a Republican, and he served six years as school director.
