He was born in Chartiers Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and was young when his parents brought him to Mt. Pleasant Township. He was educated in the subscription schools.

He resided in Mt. Pleasant township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, until 1873, when he bought and moved onto seventy-six acres of land in Cecil township.

He and his wife were members of the Chartiers Presbyterian Church. In politics he was a Republican.
