Scrips & Scraps, Scrapebook Abstracts Venango County and Surrounding Counties; pg. 117,
#448. Mrs. Jane Surrena, aged 70, wife of late Finley Surrena, died Thursday afternoon at her home in Nectarine, Irwin township, from the effects of burns received the night before as result of the explosion of a lamp. She and her granddaughter, Miss Imelda Witherup, were at home alone. The former was sitting beside a table reading by the light of an oil lamp. It began to sputter and the old lady, suspecting it was going to explode, picked it up and statred for door to throw it out. Just as she reached outside, the lamp exploded and her clothes took fire. Completely enveloped in flames, she ran down over the embankment, threw herself on the ground and rolled over in an effort to extinguish flames. Instead, she set fire to dry leaves, which blazed up. Grant Surrena, step-son and John Cook, who lived across the road, heard screams and rushed to her assistance. They and Miss Witherup succeeded in smothering the flames but she was horribly burned except a patch about size of hand on back of the neck. Burned black from the knees up. Retained consciousness, told them how it happened. Formerly Miss Jane McBride, married 19 years ago to Finley Surrena who died three months ago. Step-children survive: W. F. Howard, J. E. and Grant Surrena and Mrs. Emma Galloway, Irwin township; Mrs. Phoebe Campbell, Butler county, and Mrs. Visa Hoffman, Clinton township.
