He was reared in Butler and Venango counties, PA. He received a common school education, and then engaged in farming in Marion township after 1879. he and his family were members of the Catholic church, and in politics, he was a Democrat. After serving four years as justice of the peace of Marion township, he resigned to accept the post-mastership at Boyers, to which position he was appointed in July, 1893.
