He was a Bishop of the Reformed Mennonite Church.

He was reared to a farm life, and attended the public schools, and after finishing his course in them, he went to Mt. Morris Seminary. Later he returned to Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and for nine years he was a successful and popular teacher. He later became interested in farming in Guilford township, and for about twenty years was a farmer, when he retired to Staufferstown. In 1858 he became a member of the Reformed Mennonite Church, was chosen a minister of the same in 1861, and elected an elder in 1873. Thereafter he devoted himself to his ministerial duties.
