General Notes: Husband - Jacob Mayes
He belonged to a family of patriots as far back as the Revolutionary war, and was a well known resident of Franklin, PA, in his day, having been in business there for about thirty years as a tailor and clothing merchant. His clothing store was the first in the city, and as there was no place nearer than Pittsburgh where he could purchase stock, he made the trip to and from that city several times on foot.
He and his wife were prominent members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Franklin, PA, and their home was always headquarters for visiting ministers of that denomination. During the oil excitement this comfortable home, on the corner of what later became Thirteenth and Liberty streets, also became the headquarters for a number of prominent oil men, among whom were John D. Rockefeller and his brother William. Their homestead contained a very fine well which supplied the people of Franklin with water.
He was born near Philadelphia, educated in the public schools, and learned the tailor's trade with his father. About 1835 he located in Franklin, Pennsylvania, where he established the first custom made tailoring business in that city, continuing in that line all his life. He also engaged in the production of oil, being one of the first to obtain and operate oil leases on French creek. [GPHAV, 443]
