He was born on a farm in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania, which had been in the family for three generations. It was situated along Big Mahoning creek, on the line of Jefferson County. After attendance at the local school he was sent to an academy. His practical training was all in the line of agriculture, which he followed successfully, being considered one of the leading agriculturists of his vicinity.
He and his wife held membership in the Methodist Episcopal Church. His political support was given to the Democratic party.
