He was born at Brookville, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, and spent his entire life there, engaged in merchandising and lumbering. He was one of the early merchants at that place, and he had farm property in addition to extensive lumber holdings, being one of the most prosperous men of his generation in Jefferson County.
