General Notes: Husband - Arnold Bishop Shaw

He was reared in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, and received a liberal education in the common schools and the academy in Clearfield. He then entered his father's store as clerk, later engaging in lumbering. In 1853 he removed to Shawville, where he opened a lumber and general merchandise business, which he conducted till 1875, in that year returning to Clearfield. In 1882, he was elected vice-president of the County National Bank of Clearfield. In Clearfield and Cambria counties he owned about one thousand acres of coal lands.
In politics Mr. Shaw was a Democrat; in religious faith he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

He was reared in his native county and was educated in the district schools and the Clearfield Academy. He secured a business training under his father's eye, becoming a clerk in the latter's store and later becoming interested, as was his father, in lumbering. In 1853 he opened up a general lumber and mercantile business at Shawville, which he continued for twenty-two years, returning to Clearfield in 1875. He became interested also in the coal industry to some extent and owned probably 1,000 acres of rich coal land in Clearfield and Cambria Counties. At different times he accepted stock and served on directing boards of successful commercial enterprises, his name, at all times, being a business asset. In 1882, he was elected vice president of the County National Bank of Clearfield, a financial institution then of seventeen years standing.
