He was born in Bell township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, where he owned a farm of one hundred and sixty acres.

After the killing of his father and brother George, he removed [from Monroe County, Pennsylvania] to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, settling near Salina.
