He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and was brought to Allegheny County by his parents when an infant.

He inherited his father's estate, which later he sold to Alexander Irwin, purchasing for himself the farm adjoining, later known as the Weaver farm. He and his wife lived and died on their farm, his wife surviving him to extreme old age.
