He received his early education in the public school, and shortly after reaching manhood, became identified with the construction of the old Erie canal in the capacity of engineer. In later years he took up farming and located near Beaver, Pennsylvania, where he spent the remainder of his life. A strong Republican in politics, he nevertheless took no active part in public affairs. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church, and was a man of strong religious feelings and beliefs.
