He was educated in the Soldier's Orphans' School in Dayton, Pennsylvania, and in Lewisburg College, and after his graduation became a teller in a Pittsburgh bank. He served in that capacity for some years, and was then appointed by Gov. Hastings as bank examiner of Pennsylvania.
