He acquired his literary education in the public schools of Clarion County, Pennsylvania, while his business training was obtained in his father's store. Beginning from 1876 he was successfully engaged in merchandising on his own account, and with the exception of the year 1896 also served as postmaster, while for four years previous he filled the position of assistant. He was a pronounced Democrat in politics, and was called upon to serve as a member of the school board and as treasurer of his township. Fraternally he was a member of the Junior Order of American Mechanics.
