He grew to manhood on the home farm in South Strabane township, Washington County, Pennsylvania, and received his earliest education in an old log schoolhouse. After leaving school, he worked on the farm and assisted his father in the sawmill. He became a prosperous man. He voted the Republican ticket, and filled the position of supervisor of roads several terms.
