He spent his early years in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he attended the Birmingham and first ward schools; he was but fourteen years of age when he commenced to work for the Eagle Cotton Mills, remaining with them until he was twenty years of age; he next spent several years in farming, mostly near Smithfield, Ohio, and in 1881, with his mother, two sisters and brother, Joseph, came to Beaver County, Pennsylvania, where they purchased the Oak Hill Farm, in Borough township, which he thereafter cultivated very successfully. He served as township commissioner and as school director and was an influential member of the Washington party. He was a member of the Lutheran Church beginning from his boyhood.
