The Fiscus family is of French origin and traces its ancestry back to France, from which country his father emigrated to the United States during the latter half of the eighteenth century.

He followed farming in Westmoreland and Armstrong counties of Pennsylvania. He owned a large farm in what is now known as Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County. He afterwards removed to Armstrong County.
