He was President of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company for thirteen years. Was a member of Union League Club of Philadelphia; a director of several insurance companies; an elder in a Presbyterian church of Philadelphia many years. He was in the manufacturing business in Philadelphia before the war, later President of the Black Heath Coal Company. After this he was in partnership with his brother William in agricultural implement business at Winona, Minnesota, after this he accepted the presidency of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Co.
