He was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He went with his parents, when eight years of age, to Westmoreland County. He was a tanner in his younger days, but turned his attention to farming in his after years.

They were married by Dr. Samuel McFerren, who was at that time a noted Presbyterian minister of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
