In his early boyhood he went to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and remained there permanently. He entered the hardware store of Whitmore & Wolff as a clerk, and remained with the firm in its various changes, and became business manager of the large establishment of Wolff, Lane & Co., the leading hardware house in the Smoky City.
He was a member of the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
